Dance Audition Requirements

The audition will consist of a 2-hour class incorporating classical ballet, pointe work for women if applicable, and a 1-hour class in modern and improvisational work. Dancers should also come prepared to perform a short solo, 1-3 minutes in length, in the event that the panel requests additional work. Assessment is based on technical proficiency, physicality, and quality of movement expression. The Hartt Dance Division is looking for dancers with evidence of strong training, artistry, and facility in the following areas: physical awareness, expressiveness, coordination, articulation, suppleness, stamina, eagerness to move in both balletic and non-balletic styles, musicality and presence. Each dance applicant will also interview with a dance division faculty member.

Dress Requirements

■  Women: solid-colored leotard, pink tights, pink ballet and pointe shoes. Bare feet for modern.

■  Men: black tights, white t-shirt or leotard, white socks with black or white ballet shoes. Bare feet for modern.

NO LOOSE FITTING WARM-UPS, SKIRTS OR JEWELRY. HAIR MUST BE SECURED AWAY FROM FACE AND NECK. Please contact Hartt Dance Coordinator Amy Lesko at 860.768.2478 or lesko@hartford.edu with questions or for additional information.

Dance Audition by Video

All dance applicants who audition by video are REQUIRED to submit a DVD showing the following from a ballet class: Barre - pliés, battement tendu/dégagé, ronde de jambe par terre and en l'air, adagio, frappé, and grande battement. Center - tendu en croix with port de bras, adagio, waltz combination with pirouettes, petite and grand allegro, pointe work if applicable. In addition, two phrases of modern dance material and an improvisation or choreographed solo 1-3 minutes in length.
