Dance Audition Requirements
The audition will consist of a 2-hour class incorporating classical ballet, pointe work for women, and a 1-hour class in modern and improvisational work. Dancers should also come prepared to perform a short solo, 1-3 minutes in length, in the event that the panel requests additional work. Assessment is based on technical proficiency, physicality, and quality of movement expression. The Hartt Dance Division is looking for dancers with evidence of strong training, artistry, and facility in the following areas: physicality, expressiveness, coordination, articulation, turnout, leg extension, suppleness, elevation, turns, eagerness to move in both balletic and non-balletic styles, musicality and presence. Each dance applicant will also interview with a dance division faculty member.
- Women: solid-colored leotard, pink tights, pink ballet and pointe shoes. Bare feet for modern.
- Men: black tights, white t-shirt or leotard, white socks with black or white ballet shoes. Bare feet for modern.

Dance Audition by Video
All dance applicants who audition by video tape are REQUIRED to submit a DVD showing the following from a ballet class: Barre - pliés, battement tendu/dégagé, ronde de jambe par terre and en l'air, adagio, frappé, and grande battement. Center (must include some exercises en pointe) - tendu en croix with port de bras, adagio, waltz combination with pirouettes, petite and grand allegro. In addition, two phrases of modern dance material and an improvisation or choreographed solo 1-3 minutes in length.
NO STAGE PERFORMANCE VIDEOS WILL BE ACCEPTED.
