Undergraduate Programs

Pre-Cantorial

The Pre-Cantorial Studies major, Hartt's newest undergraduate program, is offered in conjunction with University of Hartford's Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies and prepares talented vocalists for entrance to the Jewish Theological Seminary or the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion's cantorial program. The University of Hartford is one of the few schools that offer this program nationwide and the first in NASM (National Association of Schools of Music) accredited program.

Students who decide to pursue this program will work with Hartt's renowned faculty in voice lessons and vocal coachings, and will study cantorial music, English and Italian diction, and will participate in master classes. In addition to participating in one of Hartt's choirs, students will also take music courses in piano, ear training, music theory, conducting, score reading, acting (which provides staging for lyric theater), music history and instrumentation.

Pre-cantorial students study the Hebrew language from elementary to advanced levels and gain a basic understanding and reading proficiency. The Judaic studies courses will include "Bible and Archaeology," "Modern Jewish History," "Jewish History from the Exile to the Enlightenment," "Introduction to World Religions", and "Jewish Law and Literature." This program does not require students to do an internship, but there are often employment opportunities in Hartford area synagogues. After the four-year program and completion of a senior project, students fit the requirements for graduate level cantorial programs at Hebrew Union College and Jewish Theological Seminary.

Students have full access to the Allen Memorial Library, and the W.H. Mortensen Library. All of the University libraries have collaborated with The Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies. The Maurice Greenberg Center for Judaic Studies is devoted to teaching and original research in Judaic Studies from Biblical to modern periods. Faculty from around the world have created programs that are diverse and stimulating to the student body. Founded in 1985 by a major endowment, the Center offers an opportunity to choose from a rich array of exciting classes. Students may choose a contract major in Judaic studies, Jewish education (an integrated, dual major in elementary education and Judaic Studies) or the new Bachelor of Music in Pre-Cantorial Studies through The Hartt School.
