The Mildred P. Allen Memorial Library occupies 6,000 square feet on the second floor of the East Wing of the Harry Jack Gray Center. The Allen Library houses reference and circulating materials for students, faculty and staff of the University of Hartford. Its holdings include approximately 23,800 books and bound journals on music; 32,600 scores; 25,000 sound recordings; 2,500 tapes of Hartt operas, concerts and recitals; and 425 videocassettes. Subscriptions to 220 periodical titles allow students and faculty to remain abreast of current research. An integrated automated library system provides easy access to these materials from locations on and off campus as well as to catalogs and resources in libraries throughout the world.The library is equipped with three listening rooms with turntables, compact disc players, cassette decks, and video players. Twenty-seven individual audio carrels house additional equipment. A fourth room houses a fourth video station and a Macintosh computer with an attached MIDI keyboard. Software including Finale, Professional Composer, and Performer are installed on the computer. In addition, there is an attached CD-ROM player to use Audiovisual CD-ROM programs that the library owns. Seven personal computers are available for Web-based research. A teaching seminar room fitted with a full complement of listening and viewing equipment is available to faculty for classes and lectures. A Graduate Seminar Room is open for general use. Self-service coin or card-operated photocopying machines are located at the front of the library. Metronomes and tape recorders are available at the Circulation Desk for use at Hartt. Microfilm may be used at Mortensen Library.
