An Evening with Guitar- October 22
 

The Hartt School presents An Evening with Guitar on Thursday, October 22, at 7:30 PM in Berkman Recital Hall on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. This performance features the students of Richard Provost. Admission is free. Performance 20/20- October 24 and 25
 

Hartt's innovative honors chamber music program, Performance 20/20, will perform on Saturday, October 24, at 3:00 PM and 7:30 PM, and Sunday, October 25, at 3:00 PM, in Berkman Auditorium in the Fuller Music Center on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. Concerts are free and open to the public. For more information visit www.hartford.edu/ hartt. These concerts, entitled "Allow us to Introduce Ourselves," will feature beautiful live chamber music as well as video clips from the group's rehearsals.

The Hartt School will kick off the new Richard P. Garmany Chamber Music Series with a concert by the American Brass Quintet on Thursday, October 29, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium.


Roger Murtha Retirement Celebration with the American Brass Quintet- October 30

Come to the Roger Murtha Retirement Celebration with the American Brass Quintet and help celebrate the retirement of long-time Hartt School trumpet teacher Roger Murtha on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 PM in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. Joining the Hartt Wind Ensemble is the American Brass Quintet, featuring one of Roger's former students, Raymond Mase, and Hartt's current trumpet teacher Kevin Cobb, performing Ewazen's Shadowcatcher. Also on the program are world premier tribute fanfares written by Hartt composition faculty and our new Dean, Aaron Flagg, as trumpet soloist in Evensong. Lions Gate Trio- October 30
 

The Hartt School presents the Lions Gate Trio, Hartt's trio-in-residence. The trio will perform Ravel's Duo for Violin and Piano, Shostakovich's Trio No. 1, and Brahms' B Major Trio on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 PM in Berkman Recital Hall. Admission is free. Hartford Symphony Orchestra Horn Quartet- October 31
 

Join the Hartford Symphony Orchestra Horn Quartet for "Outside In", a concert and workshop featuring the Hartford Symphony Horn Quartet on Saturday, October 31, at 1:00 PM in Millard Auditorium on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. Admission is free. The HSO Horn Quartet, comprised of hornists Barbara Hill, Emery Tapley, Hilary Lebeduhr, and Andrew Spearman, will lead the audience through the unique story of the French horn, an instrument that began by making outdoor hunting calls and gradually worked its way inside the concert hall to become one of the orchestra's most distinguished instruments. The Quartet will take turns narrating the story of the French horn, inviting questions and discussion from the audience as they play works by composers including Tcherepnin, Bozza, Weber, and Liszt.

The Hartt Performance Library Music Sale will take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, October 14 through October 30, 9:30 AM to 1:00 PM, in Room 344 of the Fuller Music Center, on the University of Hartford's West Hartford campus. There will be music books, sheet music, and musical instruments available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale will help defray the operating costs of the Hartt Performance Library.

Marcy Rosen, professor of Cello at the Mannes School and CUNY, and member of the Lions Gate Trio, Hartt's trio-in-residence, will present a cello master class on Wednesday, October 28, 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall. For more information contact Mihai Tetel at tetel@hartford.edu.


Faculty Accolades and Performances
 

Wayne State University honored Dr. John Feierabend, Director of Hartt's Music Education Division, with a Distinguished Alumni Award at the 32nd annual Ovation Awards on October 16 in Detroit Michigan. Other former music recipients include Metropolitan Opera star George Shirley, the former dean of the Eastman School of Music, Roy Ernst, and saxophonist Donald Sinta.

Bassist Nat Reeves has just finished recording for the Takagi Klavier Group based out of Japan. Joining Reeves on this recording were Joe Farnsworth, drums, and Japanese pianist Akane Matsumuto

Eran Bugge

The Hartt School Dance Division welcomes back alumna Eran Bugge '05 to the University. Bugge will be teaching Paul Taylor master classes to Dance Division students on Monday, October 26, and Tuesday, October 27. Bugge grew up in Oviedo, Florida, where she began her dance training at the Orlando Ballet School. She went on to study, with an emphasis on teaching, at Hartt under the direction of Peggy Lyman. While in Hartford, Eran Performed with Full Force Dance Theatre and the Adam Miller Dance Project. She graduated Summa Cum Laude in 2005 with a B.F.A. in ballet pedagogy. Eran joined the Paul Taylor Dance Company in the Fall of 2005. She already has had the pleasure of performing Mr. Taylor's work all across the USA and in Italy, France, Spain, Austria, Thailand, Taiwan and China.

Sharon Kenny '06 has released a new album entitled PIANOCENTRIC and recently performed tracks from the album for a packed house at Le Poisson Rouge in New York City. Click here to listen to audio clips at her website.

Pat Fiorillo '10 took 3rd place in Classical Stereo and Classical Surround categories of the 127th Audio Engineer Society (AES) Student Recording Competition in New York. Fiorillo is a Music Production and Technology major with a minor in Electrical Engineering. The Audio Engineer Society is on of the leading professional associations worldwide for professionals and students involved in the audio industry.

The Easton, Redding, and Region 9 Boards of Education announced that Michael Cicchetti '76 has been appointed the new school superintendent for the tri-district. Cicchetti will begin this role in January 2010. Currently the school superintendent in Berlin, Connecticut, Cicchetti began his career as a music teacher, specializing in choral, musical theatre, and general music.


Community Division
 

An introduction to The Aston System for Musicians, a free workshop, will be offered on Saturday, October 24, at 1:00 PM. This workshop will help participants on improve body usage and performance, decrease injury, and increase enjoyment of their instruments. This introductory workshop will also teach participants how to find their optimal playing position (each person's is different). Please bring two bath towels, your instrument, and a desire to improve your playing. The location of this workshop is TBD. A Peak Performance Techniques Seminar for Parents with Rae Tattenbaum will take place on Saturday, October 24, at 2:00 PM in the Edward C. and Ann T. Roberts Foundation Theater in the Mort and Irma Handel Performing Arts Center. This workshop will provide teachers and parents with an introduction to the techniques helpful in supporting children and adolescents who experience stress and anxiety in the area of public performance.
