Roger Murtha Retirement Celebration with the American Brass Quintet- October 30

Come to the Roger Murtha Retirement Celebration with the American Brass Quintet and help celebrate the retirement of long-time Hartt School trumpet teacher Roger Murtha on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 PM, in Millard Auditorium. Joining the Hartt Wind Ensemble is the American Brass Quintet, featuring one of Roger's former students, Raymond Mase, and Hartt's current trumpet teacher Kevin Cobb, performing Ewazen's "Shadowcatcher". Also on the program are world premier tribute fanfares written by Hartt composition faculty. Our new Dean, Aaron Flagg will be trumpet soloist in "Evensong". Lions Gate Trio- October 30
 

The Hartt School presents the Lions Gate Trio, Hartt's trio-in-residence. The trio will perform Ravel's Duo for Violin and Piano, Shostakovich's Trio No. 1, and Brahms' B Major Trio on Friday, October 30, at 7:30 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall. Admission is free. Hartford Symphony Orchestra Horn Quartet- October 31
 

Join the Hartford Symphony Orchestra Horn Quartet for "Outside In", a concert and workshop featuring the Hartford Symphony Horn Quartet on Saturday, October 31, at 1:00 PM, in Millard Auditorium. Admission is free. The HSO Horn Quartet, comprised of hornists Barbara Hill, Emery Tapley, Hilary Lebeduhr, and Andrew Spearman, will lead the audience through the unique story of the French horn, an instrument that began by making outdoor hunting calls and gradually worked its way inside the concert hall to become one of the orchestra's most distinguished instruments. The Quartet will take turns narrating the story of the French horn, inviting questions and discussion from the audience as they play works by composers including Tcherepnin, Bozza, Weber, and Liszt.


The Music of Stephen Michael Gryc: An Anniversary Celebration- November 1

The Hartt School presents the Music of Stephen Michael Gryc: An Anniversary Celebration. The Adaskin String Trio, along with Hartt faculty and students, perform music of Professor Stephen Michael Gryc on Sunday, November 1, at 3:00 PM, in Berkman Recital Hall. In celebration of Gryc's sixtieth birthday and thirtieth year of teaching at The Hartt School, the concert will include works composed during each of the past four decades, from the Five Preludes for Flute Alone of 1979 to the String Quartet of 2005. Faculty Accolades and Performances
 

Acclaimed bassist and Hartt Jazz faculty member Nat Reeves will perform with Stanley Jordan in Jazz at the Bistro in St. Louis, MO, November 4 through November 7. Click here for more information.

Hartt faculty member Stevie Zimmerman directs the upcoming Playhouse Theatre Group, Inc. production of Collected Stories by Donald Margulies. The production stars Broadway veteran Willi Burke as Ruth and the multi-talented Pearl Rhein as Lisa, and runs November 12-30 at Playhouse on Park, 244 Park Road, West Hartford. Student and Alumni News
 

John Fisher, current Graduate Professional Diploma (GPD) student at The Hartt School, won 2nd prize in the Louisiana International Piano Competition. The weeklong competition took place Monday, October 12, through Sunday, October 18. The International Piano Competition is designed to attract the world's most promising young concert artists. The competition is the "brain-child" of one of central Louisiana's most extraordinary concert artists and educators, Nikita Fitenko. Click here for more information.

Two Hartt alumni Lenny LaCroix '61 and "Sweet" Sue Terry '82 found themselves working together last year with actor/entertainer Tony Danza, whose show features him dancing and singing. LaCroix, pianist and arranger, is Danza's longtime Musical Director. Terry, saxophonist and reed player, joined the Danza team last year for an East Coast run that included the Mohegan Sun Theater and Feinstein's in New York City. "Lenny is the consummate musician," says Terry. "He arranges all the music for the show, conducts, and plays great piano as well. I've worked with many MD's and he is one of the best." This year, LaCroix and Terry appeared with Danza in October at the Hilton Resort in Atlantic City, and they will perform in Phoenix, AZ, in November. (Qi Note Records)


Community Division
 

Hartt Community Division faculty member Darlene Zoller co-directs (with Sean Harris) and Hartt alumna Marissa Giglio is music director for the world premier of Mama Tomcat - The Musical, at Playhouse on Park in West Hartford. Mama Tomcat - The Musical was written by West Hartford playwright and novelist Spring Hermann and celebrated composer and lyricist Stephen Murray, and is based on material from Luis Sepulveda's novel The Story of a Seagull and the Cat Who Taught Her How to Fly. The show opened on October 24 and runs through November 1. Click here for tickets and information.
