Frequently Asked Questions
Here
are some commonly asked questions. If you have additional
concerns, contact Erin Hamilton, assistant director of admissions,
at 860.768.4465 or by e-mail.
How can I prepare?
Work with your private teacher to prepare the audition requirements for your instument/voice type. Go over the material thoroughly. The audition is in many ways a short recital. Practice deep breathing. It will help you relax and perform at your best. The audition committee may ask you to play or sing scales and to sight-read. In this exercise, rhythmic comprehension is important. To prepare, read an unfamiliar piece of music each day. Perform your pieces for others. Tape the pieces for self-evaluation. Perform your pieces in these practice sessions as if you are actually auditioning.
What if I’m still nervous?
Nervousness is not necessarily a negative. A certain degree of nervousness adds that extra edge needed for a good performance. Again, deep breathing helps calm nerves. Be well prepared and have a positive attitude. The audition committee can distinguish talent and potential from overt signs of nervousness.
Who will hear my audition?
Your audition will be heard by one or more faculty in a teaching studio or small recital hall. Applicants inmusic theatre and theatre have the option of auditioning at one of several regional sites across the U.S.
Is there an advantage to auditioning on campus, rather than regionally or by tape?
Yes. Communication skills are best shown in person.
How should I dress for my audition?
Dressing appropriately promotes the appearance of self-confidence. First impressions are often visually based. For music auditions and interviews, business casual attire is appropriate.
