Placement Examinations Administered after a student has been admitted to a graduate program, Placement Exams are a set of knowledge and ability tests used to determine if any student review of specific music skill and content areas is required. Deficiencies identified from the Placement Examinations are satisfied by the student successfully completing of prescribed coursework.

Proficiency Examinations Particular graduate programs call for the student mastery of selected music skill achievements. Requirements for graduation, Proficiency Exams are administered to have students demonstrate the accomplishment of requisite skills. Deficiencies identified from the Proficiency Exams are satisfied by the retaking of the Proficiency Exam following independent student work.
LR Language Requirement
Comprehensive Examination A written exam administered to master’s students after course work has been completed. The exam content is focused on the specific area of study.
Recital A public performance program of significant performance repertoire. Students must first satisfactorily perform a recital jury as a prerequisite for a Recital.
Thesis A scholarly research investigation of an approved music topic presented as a written document.

Doctoral Entrance Examinations Required for admission into a doctoral program, Entrance Exams are used to determine if a student has sufficient understanding and ability to predict future academic success in a doctoral program in music.

Doctoral Oral Examinations An oral preliminary exam administered to doctoral students after approximately 12 credits of coursework to assess strengths and weaknesses in music history, music theory and a specific area of study.
Proficiency Examinations Particular doctoral programs call for selected music skill achievements. Proficiency Exams are administered as a requirement for graduation as a demonstration of mastery of requisite skills. Deficiencies identified from the Proficiency Exams are satisfied by the retaking of the Proficiency Exam following independent student work.
LR Language Requirement
Recital A public performance program of significant performance repertoire. Students must first satisfactorily perform a recital jury as a prerequisite for a Recital. Doctoral students may also be required to complete a Lecture Recital where a scholarly lecture is presented to complement a public performance program. Prior to the public presentation, The Hartt Graduate Committee must approve a topic for a lecture recital.
Doctoral Comprehensive Examination A written exam administered to doctoral students after course work has been completed. Doctoral Comprehensive Exams are comprised of three areas: music history, music theory, and the student’s specific area of study.
Thesis A scholarly research investigation of an approved music topic presented as a written document. Essays, Dissertations, and Music Compositions are three different forms of scholarly work completed at the doctoral level. The Hartt Graduate Committee must first approve topics for essays and dissertations. |
