Performance 20/20

What is the Performance 20/20 program?

The Performance 20/20 program, Hartt's Honors Chamber Music Program, is made up of a select group of gifted undergraduate and graduate instrumental performance majors who share a strong commitment to chamber music. Through an intensive schedule of rehearsals and weekly coachings, participants perform on regularly scheduled Performance 20/20 chamber music concerts throughout the year. In addition to their other degree required courses, recipients of Performance 20/20 awards are offered significant scholarships and the opportunity to study and perform chamber music in a professional atmosphere.

What should I do to prepare for my Hartt Admission audition so that I am considered for Performance 20/20?

All auditioning instrumental performance majors are automatically considered for the Performance 20/20 finals by virtue of their admission audition. Only a very limited number of auditioners are advanced by their audition committee to the 20/20 finals. Nominations from each audition committee are posted at the 20/20 table in Millard Lobby on each audition day; it is here that nominees receive a packet of detailed audition instructions. 20/20 auditions will be held following the college auditions on February 17and 18, 2006. Students who are nominated on previous audition days must return for the 20/20 auditions to be considered for these scholarships.

What are the final 20/20 audition requirements if I should be nominated?

Students are encouraged, whenever possible, to use the same material, or parts thereof, that they performed at their college audition. In some cases, the material for the 20/20 auditions is the same as the instrumental audition, and in other cases additional material is required. If you feel that your performance skill and experience would qualify you for the 20/20 program, you are encouraged to prepare the additional material required. See below for your specific instrument.

Piano Requirements:

Students must prepare two contrasting works from their departmental audition repertoire. One of the two works must be post-1900. In addition, students should prepare a collaborative work, ideally a selection from the standard instrumental sonata literature (i.e. a movement from a Brahms Violin and Piano Sonata). Please contact either of the 20/20 co-directors at the contact information below to make arrangements for a collaborative instrumentalist. To facilitate the scheduling of a rehearsal and the audition itself, please provide as much notice as possible regarding your repertoire.

Organ Requirements:

Prepare two contrasting works. A third work, collaborative in nature (and with another instrument) must be included. One of the works presented should be post-1900. Please contact either of the 20/20 co-directors at the contact information below to make arrangements for the collaborative instrumentalist. To facilitate the scheduling of a rehearsal and the audition itself, please provide as much notice as possible regarding your repertoire.

Woodwind/String/Brass Requirements:

Prepare a fast movement of a major concerto and a second contrasting work. One of the two works must be post-1900. 20/20 final auditions must be accompanied unless you are performing an unaccompanied work. Please contact either of the 20/20 co-directors at the contact information below if you are in need of finding a pianist or other collaborative musician for your audition To facilitate the scheduling of a rehearsal and the audition itself, please provide as much notice as possible regarding your repertoire.

Harp Requirements:

To facilitate the scheduling of a rehearsal and the audition itself, please provide as much notice as possible regarding your repertoire.

Percussion Requirements:

Please contact Professor Toth (btoth@hartford.edu, 860-768-5253) for a copy of part 1, including cuts. (Suggested recording for study: Nevojsa Jovan Zivkovic - The Castle of the Mad King, BIS CD-1098) A marimba solo of the student's choice A solo piece for any percussion instrument other than marimba, e.g. multiple-percussion, timpani, snare drum, steel drums, hand drums, vibraphone, xylophone, etc. Percussionists enrolled in The Hartt School's Performance 20/20 program perform advanced chamber repertoire for percussion duos, trios, quartets, etc. as well as pieces for mixed chamber ensembles, working with other students from the Performance 20/20 roster. As this is a highly selective program, only a few percussion applicants are nominated each year for a Performance 20/20 audition. The majority, if not all, of the percussionists in the program have been graduate students. Please contact Professor Toth with any questions regarding the Performance 20/20 program or audition process.

Guitar Requirements:

Required collaborative piece: Entract by Jacques Ibert Prepare a solo piece of your choice from any period other than late 20th century. Please contact either of the 20/20 co-directors at the contact information below if you are in need of finding a flutist for your audition. Please provide as much notice as possible.

FINAL NOTES ABOUT PERFORMANCE 20/20

The final audition will consist of an audition and a private interview. The audition panel will be comprised of faculty representing each instrumental department. Again, all final auditions must be accompanied, except as noted above. Currently enrolled Hartt students may be nominated by their instrumental teacher for a preliminary in-house audition at any point in a degree program. Such students may audition at one of the 20/20 Finals opportunities scheduled each year for currently enrolled students.
