Rehearsals & Performance
With studios, rehearsal rooms, and five performance spaces, the school offers a complete professional preparation in the various disciplines as well as an intensive performance schedule including recitals, concerts, operas, plays, and musicals.
Performance is an essential part of the training experience. Casting is supervised by the director of the division, in consultation with the faculty and visiting artists. The Hartt School has a variety of venues for its smaller productions, including several studios and two black box theatres. The larger productions are housed in Millard Auditorium and Lincoln Theaters.
Millard Auditorium, located in the Alfred C. Fuller Building on the University campus, is one of two main performance venues on the main campus. An intimate 428-seat house, Millard has computerized sound and lighting equipment, a 50-foot proscenium arch with a stage depth of 32 feet, a 22 line-set fly rail and a full orchestra pit.
Lincoln Theater, the larger of the two main halls, seats 716. The theatre has a thrust stage 65 feet at its widest, 52 feet from the back wall to front edge of the thrust and a full orchestra pit. It has computerized sound and lighting equipment. The dressing rooms easily accommodate up to 50 performers.
The Hartt School has two black box theatres. Both theatres are equipped with flexible seating: Berkman on the main campus holds up to 100 patrons, Upper Cheney on the Asylum Avenue campus holds 60. Performances in these venues include the third-year student public performances in theatre and music theatre. Upper Cheney is home to the annual New Play Festival.
The shows chosen for production in each of the tracks (Music Theatre or Acting) are selected from a broad range of classical, modern and experimental material. The intent is to provide experience for the student in many styles of theatre, which supports the work of the classes and extends the student’s knowledge of the theatrical repertoire.
