Music Education
Hartt's Division of Music Education offers one of the nation's
most comprehensive courses of study. Combining the rigors
of conservatory training with a solid foundation in music
education, the program prepares students for careers as
vocal or instrumental music education specialists at the
elementary and secondary levels. Music Education majors
may, in addition to general music, choral music, wind and
string instrumental pedagogy, receive training in such methodologies
as Kodály, Suzuki, Gordon's Music Learning Theory, and Orff.
On the undergraduate level, students may pursue a four-year
instrumental or vocal emphasis.
All graduate programs of The Hartt School Music Education
Division provide students with advanced training in the
pedagogy, research and practice of music education while
also preparing accomplished performers. There are five graduate
programs available: pedagogy emphasis, early childhood music
emphasis, conducting emphasis, technology emphasis, and
Kodály certification emphasis. The Doctor of Philosophy
program offers two emphases: pedagogy and early
childhood education.
The Hartt Music Education program is taught by faculty
members who, in addition to their expertise in music education,
are respected performers and researchers. They have extensive
public school teaching experience and are leaders in early
childhood, choral and instrumental music education. The
faculty are also nationally recognized for their research,
teaching and publications. Instructional materials written
by Hartt Music Education faculty are published by Boosey
and Hawkes; Holt, Rinehart and Winston, and GIA; and they
are utilized nationally as teacher-training models.
The Hartt School is proud of its National Center for Music
and Movement in the Early Years, a unique cooperative endeavor
of the Division of Music Education and the Community Division,
Hartt's non-credit teaching division. The center sponsors
research in early childhood music in addition to preschool
music and movement instruction on a weekly basis throughout
the greater Hartford area. The center also provides an opportunity
for Hartt undergraduate and graduate students to learn early
childhood music education through observation of classroom
instruction and participation in workshops and teacher-training
institutes.
