DMA & PhD Research Paper Guidelines

The purpose of this submission is to ascertain an applicant's potential in writing a research paper in music. These skills are necessary in the doctoral programs because all students, once enrolled, will complete courses that require abilities in research and writing. Moreover, all doctoral students write a doctoral dissertation or essay in fulfillment of DMA or Ph.D. degree requirements. The paper may be a research paper (with footnotes and bibliography) that was submitted at another institution on topics in music theory, music history, or music education.

Attached to the research paper include the following information:
  1. The date the paper was written
  2. Applicant's academic status at the time (undergraduate junior, master's thesis, etc.)
  3. Its original purpose: term paper for_____ course, thesis chapter, specifically revised/written for this application, etc.
