Interview Information for Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Fine Arts and Bachelor of Science in Engineering
All applicants must interview. All applicants, except those for the BA in Music without lessons and BA in Performing Arts Management, must also audition. Please review Hartt's audition requirements. Interview requirements are listed alphabetically by major.
ACTOR TRAINING
Applicants will interview with the faculty during their audition.
BA IN MUSIC (with or without lessons)
Applicants will interview with the BA faculty advisor to discuss the program and the student's interest in pursuing a liberal arts degree. If the student wishes to receive lessons while at the university, an audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice is also required.
BSE in MUSIC and ACOUSTICS
Applicants will audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice for The Hartt School after being accepted to the University of Hartford College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture and will interview with the audition committee.
COMPOSITION
Submit copies of two or three examples of your work in score and/or CD form. Please note: CD-Rs in AIFF format are acceptable, but applicants should NOT send MP3 files on disc. Compositions should be submitted with the application. Compositions will not be returned.
In addition to the interview, all composition applicants are required to audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice. The audition ensures that the applicant is at a performance level sufficient to participate in one of the school's major ensembles, a requirement of Hartt's composition curriculum.
DANCE
Applicants will interview with the faculty on their audition day.
INSTRUMENTAL PERFORMANCE
All applicants will interview with their audition committee.
JAZZ STUDIES
All applicants will interview with their audition committee.
MUSIC EDUCATION
All music education applicants must complete a classical instrumental or vocal audition. In addition, applicants will have an interview with a music education faculty member that includes singing the patriotic song "America (My Country, 'Tis of Thee)" and a test, where applicants echo-sing (a capella) 24 tonal patterns and 8 rhythmic patterns of varying difficulty.
Four-Year Vocal Music Education: (for General Music and Choral Music Careers)
Students audition with classical repertoire in either voice with the Vocal Studies Division or piano or guitar with the Instrumental Studies Division. The Vocal or Instrumental Division must first accept students wishing to pursue this emphasis. Seven semesters of private voice lessons are included for vocal students or seven semesters of private piano, organ, or guitar lessons are included for pianists or guitarists. Pianists, organists, and guitarists must also audition in voice and sing well enough to participate in the University choirs.
Four-Year Instrumental Music Education: (For Elementary through High School Instrumental Careers)
Students audition with classical repertoire on a band or orchestral instrument with the Instrumental Studies Division. Seven semesters of classical band or orchestral instrument lessons are included. This degree is not available for pianists, organists or guitarists.
Five-Year Double Major in Vocal and Instrumental Music Education: (For General Music and Choral and Elementary through High School Instrumental Careers)
Students audition with classical repertoire on a band or orchestral instrument for the Instrumental Studies Division and also audition with classical literature in voice for the Vocal Studies Division or audition on piano for the Instrumental Studies Division. Seven semesters of classical band or orchestral instrument lessons are included. Seven semesters of classical voice lessons are included.
Five-Year Double Major - Instrumental Music Education / Performance: (For Instrumental Performance careers as well as Elementary through High School Instrumental Careers)
Students audition with classical repertoire on a band or orchestral instrument with the Instrumental Studies Division. Students receive eight semesters of lessons on their primary band or orchestral instrument. Piano, organ, or guitar students wishing to pursue this emphasis must be accepted both in their own instrumental area as well as by the Instrumental Studies Division in classical repertoire for a band or orchestral instrument. Piano, organ and guitar students will receive seven semesters of classical band or orchestral instrument lessons and eight semesters of lessons on piano, organ or guitar.
Five-Year Double Major - Vocal Music Education / Performance: (For Vocal Performance careers as well as Elementary through High School Vocal Careers)
Students audition with classical repertoire in either voice with the Vocal Studies Division or piano or guitar with the Instrumental Studies Division. The Vocal or Instrumental Division must first accept students wishing to pursue this emphasis. Eight semesters of private voice lessons are included for vocal students or eight semesters of private piano or guitar lessons are included for pianists or guitarists. Pianists and guitarists must also audition in voice and sing well enough to participate in the University choirs.

MUSIC HISTORY
Applicants are required to interview with a member of the Hartt Music History faculty. The interview provides an opportunity for the applicant to discuss the program and a career in music history. It also allows the faculty member to learn more about the applicant's background and training in music. Applicants are also required to audition on a classical instrument or voice. The audition ensures that the applicant is at a performance level sufficient to participate in one of the school's ensembles, an essential component of the music history program.
MUSIC MANAGEMENT
All music management applicants are required to interview with a faculty member of the management department. In this meeting, the student is encouraged to discuss his/her areas of interest in managing the arts, and is expected to ask questions relating to the program. Applicants will also be asked to discuss their leadership experiences and abilities, and are invited to bring resumes and other materials to this meeting. The manner in which an applicant presents herself/himself, and the way in which the applicant communicates, are important factors in this process. The music management major requires a passion for the arts, excellent communication skills, and a serious commitment to both academic and artistic pursuits.
Music Management is a Bachelor of Music program requiring an audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice. Since participation in a performing organization is a requirement of this program, applicants must be at an acceptable performance level to gain admission to music management.
MUSIC PRODUCTION AND TECHNOLOGY
The interview for the Music Production and Technology (MPT) major provides an opportunity for the applicant to meet face-to-face with a member of the MPT faculty to discuss the program and a career in music production, and allow the faculty member to learn more about the applicant's musical and technical background. Prospective students are asked about their motivation for entering the field of music production and why they think they are well suited for this field. In addition to the interview, all MPT applicants are required to audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice.
MUSIC THEATRE
Applicants will interview with the faculty during their audition.
MUSIC THEORY
Applicants are required to interview in person with a Hartt music theory faculty member on a scheduled audition day. Telephone interviews are not permitted. The interview provides an opportunity for the applicant to discuss the program and a career in music theory. During the interview, the applicant will be asked to verbally analyze the melody, harmony, and form of an excerpt from the Beethoven piano sonatas. The interview also allows the faculty member to evaluate the applicant's background and training in music theory. Applicants are also required to audition on a classical or jazz instrument or voice. The audition ensures that the applicant is at a performance level sufficient to participate in one of the Hartt ensembles, an essential component of the music theory program. The undergraduate music theory major can only be undertaken as a single major and cannot be combined with another undergraduate program as a double major.
PERFORMING ARTS MANAGEMENT
All performing arts management applicants are required to interview with a faculty member of the management department. In this meeting, the student is encouraged to discuss his/her areas of interest in managing the arts, and is expected to ask questions relating to the program. Applicants will also be asked to discuss their leadership experiences and abilities, and are invited to bring resumes and other materials to this meeting. The manner in which an applicant presents her/himself, and the way in which the applicant communicates, are important factors in this process. The performing arts management major requires a passion for the arts, excellent communication skills, and a serious commitment to academic pursuits.
Performing Arts Management is a Bachelor of Arts(B.A,) program and does not require an audition.
VOCAL PERFORMANCE
Vocal performance applicants will interview with the audition committee during the audition time slot. They will also be scheduled to meet with the Director of the Vocal Studies Division following their audition to complete a brief interview and musicianship test.
