AUDITION BY VIDEO/AUDIO POLICY

Recording Submission Form

A) Music Education and Music Theory applicants, and Dance applicants living in the United States are not eligible for audition by video.  All candidates must complete auditions and interviews on campus.

B) Music and theatre applicants who live more than 300 miles from Hartford and international dance applicants may complete an audition by submitting a recorded audition.  All vocal, dance, and theatre applicants who are unable to audition in person, on campus or at the regional sites are required to send a  DVD of their audition.  All music applicants may submit a CD or DVD.

C) All recorded auditions must include the same components as an on-campus audition.

        Undergraduate Classical Instrument and Voice

     Undergraduate Jazz Instrument and Voice
        Dance
        Theatre
        Graduate Classical Instrument and Voice

D) All recordings should be clearly labeled both on the CD/DVD and on the card inserted in the CD/DVD cover with the name of the applicant, degree, instrument/voice, major, phone number, recording date and location, and the names and instruments of any accompanying musicians. CDs/DVDs that are not identified cannot be reviewed.

E) Applicants who complete their audition by CD/DVD are required to return the Recording Submission Form, completed and signed, with their audition recording stating that the recording of the audition performance is their own and has been performed without editing.

F) Recordings will be evaluated only after the University of Hartford and The Hartt School Supplemental Application and fees are received and processed.

G) Applicants should make every effort to have the best possible recording made of their audition performance. Recorded auditions that are of poor quality may result in faculty requesting a new recording or an on-campus audition. An application may be denied due to poor recording quality.

H) Recordings must be postmarked on or before January 15.

I) RECORDINGS WILL NOT BE RETURNED.

J) All applicants auditioning by recording will be considered for admission and scholarship by virtue of their DVD or CD with one exception. Recorded vocal performance applicants are not eligible for scholarships. Any award made on the basis of a recorded audition will remain subject to review at the end of the student's first year of study.

TIPS FOR MAKING A RECORDED AUDITION

  1. No editing of any kind.
  2. No artificial processing, including but not limited to, reverb, equalization, dynamics (Compressor, Limiter, Expander), and pitch alteration.
  3. A stereo recording is suggested. Microphone(s) should be approximately two feet from the instrument/voice.
  4. For instrumental recordings, please play an A-440 at the beginning of the recording to establish pitch.
  5. Audio recordings should be submitted on CD if possible.
