Early Music Ensembles
2011-2012 Early Music Ensembles are now open for registration. An audition is required for placement. Please contact Laura Mazza-Dixon for details at mazdxn@aol.com.
The Early Music Ensembles will meet for three ten-week sessions this year on Thursday evenings in room 107. Open to violin, viola, cello, viola da gamba, guitar, flute, recorder, oboe, bassoon and keyboard players who have good sightreading skills. We will use the harpsichord in room 107 for both classes. Performance opportunities will be available throughout the year.
Renaissance Ensemble
Thursdays, 6:00-7:00 pm
Laura Mazza-Dixon’s Finding Common Ground, a workshop on learning to ornament popular Renaissance tunes and create divisions over ground bass lines, will supplement the repertoire of 16th and early 17th century pavanes, galliards and fantasias.
Baroque Ensemble
Thursdays, 7:30-8:30 pm
The Baroque Ensemble will focus on trio sonatas and chaconnes. A trio sonata has two upper parts, for violin or flute and recorder or oboe. A chaconne typically is written with three upper parts, including one in viola clef. Both forms use a continuo provided by the harpsichord and a bass instrument, which could be viola da gamba or cello. This class will also provide keyboard players with an opportunity to realize figured bass lines if they are interested in learning to do so.
