Children's Program

Fall dance classes begin Wednesday, September 7, 2016.
Location: Handel Performing Arts Center, 35 Westbourne Parkway, Hartford, Conn.

  • Class size is limited. Please call for availability.

The Children’s program is designed for students who have completed the Discovery and/or Tiny Tap level and are five years old, or children new to The Hartt School Community Divsion who are between the ages of five and six. All new ballet and tap students in this age range should first sign up for Pre-Ballet or Children’s Tap I. Once in class, students will be evaluated by the instructor as to which level will be most beneficial for the child.

Ballet

Pre-Ballet and Primary Ballet

(ages 5-6 years)

When a child reaches the age of 5, Pre-Ballet will help develop their understanding of vocabulary, body awareness, and technique. Students progress to the Primary level classes where students will lay the groundwork for the next levels, bridging Children’s Ballet to Foundation Ballet. Students have the opportunity to perform in 3D Dance Dance Dance during the first weekend of June. Tuition listed for Pre-Ballet and Primary Ballet classes includes a $65 Spring performance costume fee.

Classes run for 34 weeks from September to June. Tuition is prorated after the first week of class.

Children’s Tap & Hip Hop

(ages 5 years-teen)

Our Children’s Tap program provides 5 to 6-year olds with a solid foundation in tap. Students will learn tap dance steps and terminology, focusing on rhythm, musicality, agility and syncopation. Individuality and creativity will be nurtured as children learn the fundamentals of this high-energy dance form.  In Children’s Tap 1 and 2, students will gain a solid foundation in tap vocabulary, focusing on rhythm, agility, and syncopation.  Students have the opportunity to perform in 3D Dance Dance Dance during the first weekend of June. Tuition listed for Tap 1 & 2 includes a $65 costume fee. Tap 3, 4, & 5 include a $32.50 spring performance costume accessory fee.

Jazz (ages 8 years−teen)

Jazz dance classes provide students with a strong working knowledge of the up-tempo discipline most commonly used in musical theatre and entertainment industries.  Jazz dance movements and terminology are taught with an emphasis on ballet technique foundation and include additional elements of stretch, strength, endurance, coordination and performance quality. Lower levels begin their training with a classic Broadway jazz concentration while upper levels incorporate more complex styles such as lyrical and contemporary jazz.

Tuition listed for Foundation Jazz includes a $32.50 spring performance costume accessory fee with performances scheduled for early June.

Performance Opportunities

The Nutcracker

Students enrolled in Pre-Ballet and Primary Ballet are invited to enter a lottery to participate in the Community Division Dance Department’s production of The Nutcracker held in Millard Auditorium at the University of Hartford. The lottery will be held in September, once classes have started. If selected through the lottery, students must attend a placement audition (date TBA) and be available for rehearsals throughout the Fall and in the Production Week, December 6 through 19, 2015. Performances are December 11, 12, 13, 18, 19, and 20. Costume and Audition Fees will apply.

Spring Festival

Students enrolled in Pre-Ballet, Primary Ballet, Tap, Jazz, and Hip Hop may perform in 3D:Dance,Dance,Dance. This production is a part of our Spring Festival and is held at Millard Auditorium at the University of Hartford June 3-5, 2016.

Save the Date:

  • 2016 Production of The Nutcracker is December 9, 10, 11, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18.
  • 2017 Spring Festival Performance Date of 3D: Dance, Dance, Dance is in early June. Dates TBA.
  • 2017 Spring Festival Performance Date of the full-length ballet is in early- to mid-June. Dates TBA.
