Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble (GHYWE)
“Sunday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30 is one of my favorite times of the week. One of the great joys and gifts in my life is the power of sharing music with others. Music allows us to communicate with one another in profound ways that are nearly impossible to describe with the written or spoken word. Every Sunday we come together to experience that which we can only experience when we are surrounded collectively by talented, passionate, and motivated students and teachers. Welcome to GHYWE, we expect a great deal from you but the rewards are worth it.”
—Glen Adsit, Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble Director
General Information
Since the late 1950s The Hartt School Community Division has offered students the opportunity to perform challenging wind ensemble repertoire with fellow student musicians. Originating from the Hartt Youth Symphonic Band and later the Connecticut Valley Youth Wind Ensemble, the Greater Hartford Youth Wind Ensemble is built on a long-standing tradition of providing accomplished and driven high school musicians from around Connecticut and southern New England the opportunity to perform the finest contemporary and traditional repertoire in an advanced wind ensemble setting.
GHYWE is currently composed of 55 talented high school students from around southern New England. This ensemble performs at least twice a year with works ranging from traditional wind ensemble repertoire by Percy Aldridge Grainger, to modern works by Frank Ticheli. GHYWE rehearses on Sundays from 5:30 to 7:30 pm throughout the academic year at the University of Hartford under the direction of Glen Adsit.
