Requirements for all D.M.A. and A.D. applicants:
  1. University of Hartford and Hartt School Supplementary Graduate Application forms and fees by the announced deadlines.
  2. Official transcripts from collegiate institutions.
  3. All D.M.A. and A.D. (performance emphasis) applicants must submit with the completed graduate application, a preliminary video (DVD or VHS format). All videos must contain music selections of contrasting styles and periods within a time frame of 20-30 minutes. Confirmation of the applicants audition date will follow a positive review of the preliminary audition video.
  4. Three recommendations from professors in music or other music professionals.
  5. All D.M.A. applicants must provide written evidence of ability to conduct research on a musical topic, examine music using analytical techniques appropriate to the piece, and express oneself clearly in a sophisticated manner. Any paper on a musical topic— either one that has been written in the past or one that is specially written for purposes of this application—that demonstrates all these abilities may be submitted. If a single paper does not sufficiently demonstrate all of these abilities, two papers, one in music analysis and one in music history, must be submitted. Students who feel their present abilities are not reflected in term papers they have written in the past may ask the Division of Academic Studies for suggested topics on which to write a new paper. The paper will not be returned.
  6. Applicants auditioning for the Artist Diploma or D.M.A. programs in instrumental or vocal performance are required to have an in-person audition and interview before a faculty committee.
  7. Entrance testing - All D.M.A. applicants are required to complete Music History and Music Theory (including ear training) Entrance (Proficiency) Examinations prior to acceptance. Testing dates are listed on the Graduate Audition Schedule page.
  8. D.M.A. and A.D. candidates in composition and conducting, or with a minor in conducting, must take a proficiency exam in score reading, keyboard proficiency and keyboard harmony.

Following a preliminary review of the videotape, the applicant will be mailed confirmation of audition date as indicated on the Audition Schedule sheet within the application. All D.M.A. and A.D. auditions must be performed in person at Hartt.

International Applicants

  • Applicants whose native language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 580 is required for all D.M.A. programs.
  • All international applicants must provide a certified Guarantor’s Statement of Financial Support with accompanying bank documentation showing sufficient assets (in U.S. dollars) to support the Guarantor’s Statement.

Additional Requirements for D.M.A. and A.D. candidates:

Composition Requirements:
In lieu of an audition, applicants in Composition must submit in advance three samples of their works and schedule an interview during the scheduled audition dates.

Choral and Wind Band Conducting Requirements:
Applicants in conducting must prepare a videotape (VHS format), 30 minutes in length maximum, containing two or three sections of contrasting material. The camera should be positioned facing the conductor. It is recommended that the student also submit an audiotape, of approximately the same length, demonstrating additional conducting experience. If possible, a segment should be included showing the applicant conducting an ensemble with a soloist. All finalists for the Wind Band and Choral Conducting programs will be required to complete an on-campus conducting audition.
