Doctor of Philosophy - Music Education

General Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy degree program, applicants must provide evidence of:
  • superior scholastic ability
  • broad musical and educational background
  • a capacity to profit from advanced study in music education
  • completion of a master’s degree from an accredited institution. In addition, all applicants must have completed a minimum of two years of successful music teaching in an elementary or secondary, public or private school.

Application Procedures
Applicants must submit to the University of Hartford’s Center for Graduate and Adult Academic Services the following:

  1. University of Hartford and Hartt School Supplementary Graduate Application forms and fees by the announced deadlines.
  2. A complete set of official transcripts from the applicant’s undergraduate and graduate colleges/universities, which will be used to assess the quality of previous undergraduate and graduate work.
  3. Three recommendations from professors in music, including one from a senior school administrator, for the evaluation of the applicant’s past and probable success in graduate school.
  4. Demonstrate a proficiency in teaching by submitting a 30-minute videocassette (VHS format) to be reviewed by members of the music education faculty.
  5. Submit results from the Graduate Record Exam or the Miller Analogies Test to provide a predictive indication of success in advanced studies.
  6. A paper indicating career objectives in relation to the Ph.D. program in music education, demonstrating an ability to write and assessing whether goals are consistent with program objectives.
  7. A recent research paper (such as in Music History or Music Theory) that demonstrates ability to express complex ideas and is an indication of graduate student potential.
  8. Complete an on-campus interview with the Chair of Graduate Studies in Music Education and additional music education faculty, dependent on applicant’s background and degree emphasis.
  9. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination (minimum score of 580) and must also pass the University of Hartford–administered English Proficiency Examination.
  10. All international applicants must provide a certified Guarantor’s Statement of Financial Support with accompanying bank documentation showing sufficient assets (in U.S. dollars) to support the Guarantor’s Statement.
