Master of Music Education
*Applicants for this degree must have completed a bachelor's degree in music education at an accredited institution.
All applicants to Music Education must
submit:
- University of Hartford and Hartt School Supplementary
Graduate Application forms and fees by the announced deadlines.
- Official transcripts from all institutions which the applicant has earned credit.
- Three recommendations from professors in music or from
a senior school administrator.
- A 30-minute video (DVD or VHS format) of excerpts of
the applicant’s teaching (classroom and/or ensemble
rehearsal).
- A letter of intent indicating the applicant’s career objectives
and their relation to the Master of Music Education program
as a demonstration of the ability to write and to assess
whether the applicant’s goals are consistent with program
objectives.
- Interview with the Chair of Graduate Studies in Music Education, which will be scheduled during the audition days. The interview will include the applicant singing "America (My Country 'Tis of Thee)" and a test of singing that includes a cappella echo singing 24 tonal patterns and 8 rhythmic patterns of varying difficulty.
- Applicants whose native language is not English must
submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language
(TOEFL). A minimum score of 550 is required for acceptance
into the M.Mus.Ed. program.
- All international applicants must provide a certified
Guarantor’s Statement of Financial Support with
accompanying bank documentation showing sufficient assets
(in U.S. dollars) to support the Guarantor’s Statement.
Additional M.Mus.Ed. Emphasis Area Application Requirements:
Pedagogy (instrumentalgeneral music)
No additional application requirements.
Choral Conducting
A 30-minute video (DVD or VHS format) of excerpts of the applicant’s conducting (choral ensemble rehearsal/ concert) in lieu of 30-minute teaching tape.
Instrumental Conducting
A 30-minute video (DVD or VHS format) of excerpts of the applicant’s conducting (instrumental ensemble rehearsal/concert) in lieu of 30-minute teaching tape.
Performance
Perform a 30-minute audition of varied repertoire (contrasting styles and periods and examples of technical and lyrical expression). The audition will be performed before applied faculty member(s) by arrangements made through The Hartt School Admission Office. Applicants who live more than 300 miles from campus may submit a videotaped (DVD or VHS format) audition with prior approval. A 30-minute teaching tape and performance audition are required for M.Mus.Ed. performance emphasis.
