Master of Music

Master of Music and Graduate Professional Diploma:

Please note: The Hartt School will not be accepting applications to the Orchestral Conducting programs for the 2010-2011 academic year.

All applicants are required to submit:

  1. University of Hartford and The Hartt School Supplementary Graduate Application forms and fees by the announced deadlines.
  2. Official transcripts from the applicant’s collegiate institutions.
  3. Three recommendations from professors in music or other music professionals. The applicant will be mailed confirmation of an audition date as indicated on the Audition Schedule Sheet within the application.
  4. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit results from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 550 is required for all Master of Music programs. Students applying for the Graduate Professional Diploma and whose TOEFL score is 525 or less will be required to participate in English language study until adequate English language skills are attained. Students whose scores are between 525 and 550 may be required to participate in English language study.
  5. All international applicants must provide a certified Guarantor’s Statement of Financial Support with accompanying bank documentation showing sufficient assets (in U.S. dollars) to support the Guarantor’s Statement.

Additional Requirements for Master of Music Candidates in:

Instrumental Conducting
Composition
Music History
Music Theory

  1. Applicants in choral or instrumental conducting should submit a 30-minute video (DVD or VHS format) of themselves conducting BOTH a rehearsal AND a performance appropriate to their medium. The camera should be positioned behind the performers facing the conductor. Hartt admissions will contact the applicant if an additional live audition is required.
  2. Applicants in Composition must submit three samples of their compositions in lieu of an audition. Send photocopies, as materials submitted will not be returned. Master’s and GPD applicants are required to have an interview. This can be done during the scheduled audition days or by phone.
  3. Applicants in Music History (Research emphasis) or Theory should submit an appropriate research paper or other evidence of scholarly writing, published or unpublished. No audition is required.
  4. Applicants in Music History (Performance Practice emphasis) will need to select an audition date and submit a research paper.

  6. Repertoire List/Performance resumé

The Hartt School offers a wide range of performance and nonperformance majors within the Master of Music degree program. Programs are designed to focus student's achievements toward the highest levels of accomplishment. Applicants for this degree must have completed a Bachelor's degree in music from an accredited institution.
