Orchestral Conducting
Highly-qualified graduate students may pursue advanced study in orchestral conducting on the Master's (MMus) and GPD level. These programs are designed for students who are interested in, and demonstrate the potential to succeed in, a professional conducting career from university to full-time orchestral positions. In addition to podium time with the Hartt Symphony Orchestra, including conducting in performances, orchestra reading sessions, sectional rehearsals, and woodwind and brass repertoire classes, the program offers practical conducting lessons with a string quintet and piano. Conducting students also have weekly private lessons and musicianship classes and, in the master's program, course work in related disciplines (e.g. composition, music history, orchestration, music theory, and score reading). A recital is also required, using small ensembles comprised of Hartt students.
