The Hartford Symphony Orchestra has commissioned Hartt Composition faculty member Stephen Gryc to compose a violin concerto for their great Concertmaster Leonid Sigal. The orchestra, under the direction of Edward Cumming, will give the premiere performances of Gryc's Harmonia Mundi, on Thursday, May 19, at 7:30 PM; Friday and Saturday, May 20 & 21, at 8:00 PM; and Sunday, May 22, at 3:00 PM. Gryc will be speaking to the audience an hour before each concert.
Gryc says, "These performances are a milestone in my artistic career, and a thrilling performance by the redoubtable Lenny Sigal is guaranteed. I have attempted to compose a deeply personal work, one that is unique in form and concept though it fulfills the expectations for a solo concerto. The work's four movements bear the names of the four classical elements (Water, Earth, Fire, and Air) where each element becomes a metaphor for a spiritual state."
