Apple MacBook Requirement

This page is designed to inform incoming Hartt School students about the computer systems you are expected to have for your program of study.  The specifications on software and peripherals may be different for each major.  Please find the name of your major below for details.  If your major is not listed below then the specifications listed under "General Computer Information" will be all that you need.  Information on purchasing details can be found at the bottom of the page.

General Computer Information

NOT all incoming undergraduate students are required to have an Apple laptop computer. The requirement, and required model, is based on your major. Find your major under one of the model specifications below.

15" MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (Required software is listed in parenthesis)

Required of the following majors:

Music Production and Technology (Pro Tools 9 is required as well as a pair of Sony 7506 headphones)

Music Composition
(Most recent version of Finale is required of all majors; other software will be required with specific courses. Also requires a MIDI keyboard and pair of Sony 7506 headphones)

Dance (Photoshop Elements is required)

13" MacBook Pro 2.4 GHz (Required software is listed in parenthesis)

Required of the following majors:

Music Education
(Most recent version of Finale and MS Office)

Music History

Music Management/Performing Arts Management
(Photoshop Elements or comparable photo editing software)

Music Theory

(Although not required, any student can feel free to use a computer with higher specifications with those listed above. These specifications should be seen as a minimum requirement.)

If your major was not listed above it means that you are not required to purchase an Apple Laptop.  While not required it is still highly recommended that students go with Apple if looking to purchase a new computer.  This will ensure compatibility with faculty and other students.
