SummerTerm

Summerterm Testimonials

  • This was an excellent course about not only jazz improvisation, but also jazz history, style, and big band techniques.
  • Kris Allen was very in tune with the needs of his students and adjusted his instruction constantly to adapt.
  • I highly recommend this course to anyone that is relatively new, and open-minded to improvisation.
  • I got a lot of good ideas and tips from the instructor and other participants.
  • The handouts and resources were very helpful and there was a lot of time for discussions on varied topics and playing different instruments.
  • This was a fantastic experience. The professor is extremely knowledgeable and went out of his way to meet our individual needs.
  • He is one of the best instructors I have experienced. For a practicing musician this is exactly the kind of course I need.
  • Absolutely fantastic! I have a much greater understanding of Finale Music Notation and how to use it. I would like to take this class again next year to further increase my knowledge and ability to use this program to the fullest extent.
  • In order to be a good choral teacher it is important to be able to model good vocal technique for the students. This was a valuable class because by participating you feel the same way our students do. This was time well spent! Thank you!
  • The class was wonderful!!! Cherie was amazing!!! She helped all of us become much better singers and gave us the information and tools to work with our students and to help them sing correctly and beautifully.
  • Work with the Amidons was one of the most incredible experiences I've ever had. They broke down every dance and activity so that it was easy for us to learn and easy for us to teach our children. I wouldn't think twice about taking this class again; it was amazing.
  • **This workshop far exceeded my expectations. The instructors created a safe atmosphere in which risk taking was possible. We had the freedom to fail—and this gave us the freedom to soar.
  • The efforts of every participant were validated. We were, indeed, a wonderful "learning community" for a week. I recommend this course to every elementary general/vocal music teacher who is comfortable with either the Orff or Kodaly approach, but want to branch out to learn more about the other approach in a very accepting learning environment.
  • Professor Adsit and Michael Colgrass worked amazingly well together teaching, and created an excellent classroom environment. I would highly recommend it to anyone.
  • By far the most relevant, applicable, and informative class I have ever taken. Ben Toth is an outstanding instructor who genuinely wants every student to be successful.
  • One of the highlights of the class for me was being able to listen to the other students play and then listen to the instructor's suggestions on how they may improve their playing.
  • This is the second year I have taken this workshop and it continues to be unbelievably helpful in my growth as both a musician and a conductor. Professors Adsit and Haithcock knew exactly how to analyze where each student needed help in their conducting and were able to explain and demonstrate exactly how to move to the next level.
  • I was highly impressed with this workshop. I did take it only on the observer track because I honestly did not know what to expect since I have not taken any courses from Hartt before. I am probably going to be taking this course again next year for credit.
  • I came to this class with limited knowledge of world percussion, and virtually no experience with drum set. I never would have believed that I could have learned so much in just one week! Mr. Toth is an amazing player and also a very gifted teacher. His logical step-by-step approach to teaching makes even difficult material very accessible. I highly recommend this class!
  • I had a terrific experience and would recommend the course to my colleagues. Professor Toth is such a versatile musician, and has given me many ideas on how to engage more thoroughly my middle school percussionists.
  • This class was exactly what I was looking for and exceeded any expectations I may have ad. I am looking forward to continuing my Summerterm studies at Hartt next summer (this was my first class at Hartt).
  • I found the Choral Conducting workshop to be EXTREMELY valuable. Both instructors gave tons of information on conducting technique and vocal pedagogy. They were always professional, honest, and critical yet encouraging. They provided us with an incredible packet of quality material, and the assignments we had led to even more resources we can use in our daily practice.
  • Sightreading was never one of my strong suites but due to a small class and the effectiveness of the instructor I have increased my ability 10 fold. I am now a much stronger and more confident reader. We love Gabor!
  • Jeff is an amazing teacher! I really enjoyed being part of this class and learning so much about the origins of American Fold Music.
  • Words cannot convey how helpful I found this class. Jeff inspired me over the course of the last year to really dig into the folk literature and was the reason my knowledge of the repertoire grew so much.
  • Dr. Bolkovac is an extremely knowledgeable, inspiring, and entertaining teacher and conductor. I've learned a lot about group singing, my voice, and how I might be a better choral teacher from him.
  • Dr. Feierabend is very intelligent and very passionate about teaching music to children. I found his approach to be very inspiring and effective.
  • Summerterm Staff

  • Thanks to all of the Summerterm staff at The Hartt School for all of the work they put into it every year. They are extremely well-organized and willing to answer any questions.
  • I would like to thank Dr. Hansen and the staff of Summerterm for being extremely organized and knowledgeable, not only about academic classes, but also about on-campus accommodations.
  • The Hartt staff really goes above and beyond...
  • Hartt Summerterm staff was great!
